Hey! Where Did You Find That Dev?
The question on hiring technical team members has come up so much recently that it made me wonder what else founding teams might be doing to fix this problem. Maybe there were some hacks I didn’t know about that worked that I could add to the arsenal of advice. Maybe my approach was wrong and actually people were having loads of success with other means and I just don’t know about it. I would be more than happy to be wrong and learn other approaches.
Earlier this year I put out an anonymous survey to the Ignite alumni (new and old), and my wider network to get an idea of how people approached finding and hiring developers for their businesses. Now, I’d like to share the results.
It’s worth noting that I don’t think the sample size here is big enough to call it ‘representative’, but there are enough patterns here to use as pointers. You could say that it’s definitely enough to sense check your approach against and feel confident moving forward.
I’ll outline the question, the results and also the reason I asked in the first place. Let’s dig in.
1. How long have you been in business?
84% of respondents have been operating for 12 months or more with 47% having been around 2 years or more. Just 16% of the companies that responded had been in business more than 3 months and less than one year.
